Hello again :) Yes, I know my "Currently August" was only about a week ago but so much has happened in a mere week that I decided to link up with Farley at <span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'banda regular', verdana; font-size: 17px; line-height: 23.7999992370605px;">over at </span><a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.ca/" style="background-color: white; color: #ea3d59; font-family: 'banda regular', verdana; font-size: 17px; line-height: 23.7999992370605px; text-decoration: none;">Oh' Boy Fourth Grade</a> again.</div>

<u>Listening:</u></h3>

Ok, so I might be slightly obsessed with Periscope (read slightly...) but it has become one of my teacher wellness treats. I limit myself to about 30 minutes at the end of the day once my planning is done (now that school has started back up again) and have received such valuable information and made invaluable connections. A shout-out to two of my #perifriends Jess who blogs at <a href="http://www.thewhimsicalteacher.com/" target="_blank">The Whimsical Teacher</a> and Mikey blogging at <a href="http://mikeydteachertopix.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Mikey D Teacher Topix</a>, seriously check these two out, they crack me up!</div>

<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>Loving:</u></h3>
<div>
Last weekend a group of us launched a new bi-weekly Blab show called <a href="https://globaledventures.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Global Edventures</a>. We are four teachers who teach across four different continents. Laura blogs at <a href="http://year2tastic.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Year2tastic</a>, Erin at <a href="http://www.learningtobeawesome.com/" target="_blank">Learning to be Awesome</a> and Allie at <a href="http://www.alliethegypsyteacher.com/" target="_blank">The Gypsy Teacher</a>. These ladies are awesome, point blank! <br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>Thinking:</u></h3>
<div>
Ok this one is completely non-teaching related but let me just say OMG! My bf of almost 10 years told me that he wants me to send him pictures of engagement rings stat... Our anniversary is on September 28th so I will keep you all (or as most of my #teachertoottoot friends would say "ya'll") posted in the weeks to come. Needless to say i'm #superexcited! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>Wanting:</u></h3>
<div>
To be blunt - i'm tired... I'm just overcoming bronchitis and back to school has really kicked my butt. I'm excited to be back with my kiddos but REALLY looking forward to more sleep, especially with a long weekend coming up :) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>Needing:</u></h3>
<div>
With back to school comes lots of printing needs. I am already on my second round of ink and needing to purchase more... This is what happens when you don't have a printer or photocopier at school yet! Here's hoping it comes soon :S</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>3 Goals:</u></h3>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Be Positive - I recently read an excellent article about teacher types and I want to be a marigold, no walnut tree here!</li>
<li>I am aiming to do three scopes on Periscope per week this month. I love being able to connect with everyone and as I mentioned before, i'm a bit obsessed with the platform :)</li>
<li>My goal this weekend is to set up my teachers pay teachers store so I can put up my first product - a door decor freebie :) </li>
</ol>
</div>

I'm really loving all of these teacher link-ups that I have recently found! This post is about a monthly link-up with Farley over at <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.ca/">Oh' Boy Fourth Grade</a>. I like that you can be creative with the graphic and that it provides </div>

<a name='more'></a><br />
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>Listening:</u> </h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I recently discovered an acoustic playlist of pop song covers on Songza and this song was highlighted. I hadn't heard the original before but man, can this girl ever sing! The playlist is so relaxing - perfect for getting some work done on the computer... or writing a blog post ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>Loving: </u></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well I recently wrote about both of these things in my first Five for Friday post, but I need to bring them up again. The networking opportunities that Periscope has provided me with have been unbelievable so far! I have made some amazing teacher friends through Google Hangouts (#teachertootoot) and a Facebook Group (#teachershelpingteacherstribe), both of which I discovered using Periscope. I am so very grateful for the support & guidance that my online friends have given me. You ladies are amazing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>Thinking:</u></h3>
<div>
Well that summer sure flew by fast! I can't believe that back to school is only 2 days away... well officially anyways. Unfortunately i'm moving classrooms and have to unpack everything and I was hoping to start a week earlier in my classroom but the school isn't ready so I couldn't get a head start. How are you feeling about going back? Excited? Nervous? Both? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>Wanting:</u></h3>
<div>
I really wish I had more time to prep for back to school... but don't we all? Time really does become so valuable once you are a teacher. When I think about all of the free personal time I had back at my previous job, it seems like a distant memory... but I wouldn't have it any other way. I know that I am on my teacher journey and that I will get better with each new year. I just need to get back into the swing of things and plan for the next couple of days before I have to go back to the real world.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>Needing:</u></h3>
<div>
Since I started teaching I have had some serious teacher envy over Teacher Supplies Toolkits. They are all over <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=teacher%20toolbox&term_meta%5B%5D=teacher%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=toolbox%7Ctyped">Pinterest</a> and I really, really want one. UPDATE: My teaching bestie just texted me and she <u>bought</u> me one while she was on vacation! Um - how amazeballs is that? Teacher love right there my friends!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<u>B2S RAK:</u></h3>
<div>
This year my motto is all about positivity. Gone are the dreaded newbie teaching days which were fraught with new and scary scenarios that left me drained and emotionally unprepared. So this year I want to secretly put a small teaching welcome bag in each of my fellow teacher's mailboxes. The bag will include a hand sanitizer, a personalized paint-chip bookmark and a quote or note to each one. It won't be too time consuming considering we only have 22 teachers in the whole school :)<br />
<br />
So I know i'm posting this extremely late but I promise to try the next "Currently" post at the <u>start</u> of September rather than save it for the end lol. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
So as promised on my Periscope, here is my post about an awesome new classroom management tool - <a href="https://game.classcraft.com/">Classcraft</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When you first create an account, you are automatically greeted with a pop-up that allows you to explore, watch video tutorials or read FAQ. I found this extremely helpful as a newbie and was able to navigate very easily after watching only 2 video tutorials.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYXLAqT_p8_FyKWOJHvVGTnmeaxEoQlDHkkPS7sw_KZY_5IenEfiZnRY-fDFKZLSgGYZzTO52kO0HhrHlQ6RI1CfSK5lX2-UT0vXDqlPj06-aKuZ-5PgD4mFNFl85-ZkdeOqX0dXFyVUU/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-08-13+at+12.04.57+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYXLAqT_p8_FyKWOJHvVGTnmeaxEoQlDHkkPS7sw_KZY_5IenEfiZnRY-fDFKZLSgGYZzTO52kO0HhrHlQ6RI1CfSK5lX2-UT0vXDqlPj06-aKuZ-5PgD4mFNFl85-ZkdeOqX0dXFyVUU/s320/Screen+Shot+2015-08-13+at+12.04.57+AM.png" width="320" /></a>Now for the meat - Why Classcraft? Not only is it gamification at its finest, but it also promotes collaboration and keeps students accountable to themselves and their teammates. Rewards and "punishments" are completely customizable, although they do provide you with a few examples to begin with. Students must first decide what type of character they want to be (mage, warrior or healer) and then are put into teams that consist of each type of character. I plan to do this on the first day and then use those groups for their seating plan for the first month or two. </div>

There are extensive features including "The Wheel of Destiny" which allows the teacher to select a student or group at random to answer a question or perform a task for HP. The more HP a player/student gets, the faster they can level up. The students can also name their group and pick a logo for ease of recognition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Another fun feature that is included is the "Random Event" feature. If you want to regain their attention, or keep their attention until the end of class, this can be promised. Be forewarned though, not all events are positive. Some could ensue with the loss of points... dun dun dun! lol<br />
<br />

Here is an example of a positive event where everyone gained 5 AP. Just remember that HP is life and AP is experience points. Health is required to stay out of the Book of Laments (a punishment) and experience is needed to level up. Because students are playing both as individuals and as groups, it hold them more accountable for their actions.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Another feature that I really liked was the Quests page. At the moment, it consists of a countdown and a stopwatch quest that can be used for in-class tasks that need to be completed. If a student or a whole group completed their work within the timeframe, they can earn AP.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The product is free with options to upgrade for more features (gold and customization). There are forums that the students can use for collaboration (moderated of course) and student logins.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Teachers also have a separate dashboard that includes a gradebook, a users forum, student analytics and a moderator section for posts. All of this is free and I am really excited to try it this year in my classroom. There are also apps available for both IOS and Android making it portable. The last thing I want to mention is that if you are a high school teacher or a specials teacher, you can share your class with other teachers, enabling students to gain points in other classes under one account.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Hi everyone! So I am trying out another linky party today with Tara from <a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.ca/">4th Grade Frolics</a>. So here goes nothing with my very first Monday Made It!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiv3RwfQrCMNDNu2h0mwjv366lvzgC25pdTlvuuvuj3pstEi95cj5nw60h84nVhHy3_B0XrWLf1itcjIokPqBPYQE6KkrvFRc2XuN9VmPKu8_a3YeexQNeG8dKo-XeuG3NPenvuS2Qpos/s1600/Button+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiv3RwfQrCMNDNu2h0mwjv366lvzgC25pdTlvuuvuj3pstEi95cj5nw60h84nVhHy3_B0XrWLf1itcjIokPqBPYQE6KkrvFRc2XuN9VmPKu8_a3YeexQNeG8dKo-XeuG3NPenvuS2Qpos/s200/Button+1.png" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg0FufD5Q2cCPS5bWZDYw7JHtqTGLgMskG17N4wilP0JZKHoRY3mn0UyboH6ydwdSMzSK8ZnsZShFHZpQL7V94mPYuQQZHCZimqX3YaEobuxp_JH-u2cReH0x-Zndn2f3qihKEEcLrQZ4/s1600/finished2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg0FufD5Q2cCPS5bWZDYw7JHtqTGLgMskG17N4wilP0JZKHoRY3mn0UyboH6ydwdSMzSK8ZnsZShFHZpQL7V94mPYuQQZHCZimqX3YaEobuxp_JH-u2cReH0x-Zndn2f3qihKEEcLrQZ4/s200/finished2.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For a bit of background - I am in the process of setting up a new home office (yay to having the space finally) but I am lacking in equipment to hold my supplies :S This is where my idea for my first ever Monday Made it came from....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Materials Needed:</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1) A recycled cooler or beer (4-piece) container</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2) Coloured scotch tape</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here's what I started out with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeSdG8C8OUwhSNECjQfUBTWHc8ysrh42EWEiVxXslzQV6c4nUQ0oetBbUuuSYFCYtn1SHTldV5P-O4SvDGjsF0ExYbmUkhzggTkOMFLzYstoYEuhf2GvShTC_hcwPrkrYRCrPTQCpLbPk/s1600/case.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeSdG8C8OUwhSNECjQfUBTWHc8ysrh42EWEiVxXslzQV6c4nUQ0oetBbUuuSYFCYtn1SHTldV5P-O4SvDGjsF0ExYbmUkhzggTkOMFLzYstoYEuhf2GvShTC_hcwPrkrYRCrPTQCpLbPk/s320/case.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To fill with all of this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGe9KKb_0-lQ63xRFsGo6Sj4ndODQ_r3US3w2-WZHGyH_doMUy8_SCAahaitmkQgpxgpfeWj8S4Dsoiw4rQKBXK0-GqbqdvpvdGWfnHorXTjc326zx8yYb6lA6Aved_891CIYeIAzX_Eo/s1600/supplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGe9KKb_0-lQ63xRFsGo6Sj4ndODQ_r3US3w2-WZHGyH_doMUy8_SCAahaitmkQgpxgpfeWj8S4Dsoiw4rQKBXK0-GqbqdvpvdGWfnHorXTjc326zx8yYb6lA6Aved_891CIYeIAzX_Eo/s320/supplies.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I started out by taping the bottom of the container to ensure durability (some of them have holes) and then began taping the whole container with the colourful tape. The end result????</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>TA-DA!</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiONGasYMFQbtRQ3W5Vb6nfFoOR6aXYj4le9FLiyXee6VAz5ChDpSwo22g4UZsScKq3RP7qr_RFgitwtE-gqwY5FQhRMLAHWBpYyOpZUD3KUyDjx2Wwugazgwv6GwRWMAG2vehvlEza9Y/s1600/finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiONGasYMFQbtRQ3W5Vb6nfFoOR6aXYj4le9FLiyXee6VAz5ChDpSwo22g4UZsScKq3RP7qr_RFgitwtE-gqwY5FQhRMLAHWBpYyOpZUD3KUyDjx2Wwugazgwv6GwRWMAG2vehvlEza9Y/s320/finished.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj352GOHCuUwaXKvjbc2EV8h6UcMAhdVqO-ao8bY5k7feo32ZDtGY_8E9Ob-8PT93pKnzlb6KJlPcHcNCOhUyg4m-A1fM6Z9fArlRKIdKIq9xK2mHAZuLWXdSLzsHB0Yjq1I7mCP3wtATU/s1600/finished2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj352GOHCuUwaXKvjbc2EV8h6UcMAhdVqO-ao8bY5k7feo32ZDtGY_8E9Ob-8PT93pKnzlb6KJlPcHcNCOhUyg4m-A1fM6Z9fArlRKIdKIq9xK2mHAZuLWXdSLzsHB0Yjq1I7mCP3wtATU/s320/finished2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And to finish, I also decided to tape up a Rice cracker container to sort my pins and such.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope you like my first attempt at a Monday Made It! I love that my supplies are now portable and easily accessible :)</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This past week has meant lots and lots of driving. I don't necessarily love being in a car in the first place but being the only one who can drive kinda sucks... especially for 9 hour trips. We made it though! This summer has been full of driving - first a 6-hour drive to see my parents, then 2-hours to see a friend in Montreal, 6 hours back to the North then a couple days later a 9-hour trip to Barrie, ON to see his dad and then back home a week later. Unfortunately it's not over either :S I'll be heading back down to Barrie again this week for a wedding. Thank goodness I finally have a vehicle of my own (woohoo no more rentals) or else this would be very hard on the wallet!</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's that time of year again! Time for me to fill my freezer with delicious wild blueberries :) Not only are they a treat to my tastebuds, but they are also light on the wallet. How? We pick them ourselves in a field! It takes a bit of time (and a toll on your back) but it is SO worth it! Yesterday we picked about $100 worth in about 2 hours. Can't wait to eat some of these delectable little berries - YUM!</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
This week, once again has been very non-teacher related as we were traveling and visiting with family members. On our way back home from Barrie, some of Mike's family decided to convoy up with us to visit the great white North (ok, not white <u>yet</u> but it will be sooner than i'd like). They stayed with us for a couple days but unfortunately it rained the whole time they were here. This meant we didn't have much to do but I tried my best to entertain the 11 year olds :) (which wasn't too hard since I teach their age level.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have to admit, every time I visit either of our homes, I stop in at Value Village. It is a bit of an addiction really... Not only for the awesome teacher clothing finds that I come across regularly, but also for the cheap books! I swear half of my classroom library has been supplied by Value Village. I try to wait for their 50% off sales but there is very little notice and the closest one to me is about 6 hours away :S So I make do with the opportunities that I do have and pick up what I can when i'm down. What fab finds did I come across this time? Hard cover copies of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" collection! I got 5 books for $6 CAD, as they have a "buy 4 get the 5th free" and each book was only a $1.50! As a teacher, you gotta love second hand stores!</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now for something teacher-related lol. So I guess with only three weeks until I go back to school, planning is a must! Since i'll be teaching a new grade again this year (6th grade) I started out by deconstructing the QEP again. I am currently in the process of doing my long-term planning so that I can at least have something to put in my teacher planner other than "important dates" and when i'm finished i'll share in on my blog for you all. I've also finished my classroom design plan. I decided rather than trying to be all fancy this time around, I just did a quick mock-up in Pic Monkey and it worked out fine. I'll be going in a week early to try and set up my new classroom because I had to pack up everything for the move to my new classroom. I'm just hoping i'll be done everything before the kiddos come back because boy... do I have a lot of stuff for such a small space :S </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
P.S. Any suggestions for small space organization is greatly appreciated ;)</div>

Hey guys and gals! So i've decided to try something new on here, and link up with the lovely Kacey over at <a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.ca/">Doodle Bugs Teaching</a> for her weekly "Five for Friday" posts. Basically it's a weekly sum-up all in one post of what's been going on in my life. If you'd like to learn more, please jump on over to her blog and find out more :) So, without any further ado... here goes nothing!</div>

This app has very quickly become my new social media obsession! The week started out with me following a of couple teachers (live) sharing things like their classroom set-up or various resources and developed into me (somewhat) overcoming my nerves and doing a couple of my own live broadcasts. The advice I got from other teachers was to start out by introducing yourself and then to simply share what you are passionate about :)</div>

Through Periscope I was also able to connect to pretty amazing peeps! These ladies have been so warm and welcoming, and although I felt a bit like a creeper at the beginning (simply watching and not really saying much), I am now happy to feel like part of their #TeacherTribe. I may be the token Canadian, but everything that these ladies have shared with me has really lit a fire under my bum, especially in terms of my blog. Two of the ladies who i'd like to give a shout out to this week are Misty at <a href="http://krazyaboutteaching.blogspot.ca/">KrazyAboutTeaching</a> who first invited me in and Farrah at <a href="http://mrsshipley.com/">Mrs. Shipley's Classroom</a> who has introduced me to the wonderful world of Whole Brain Teaching.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This week i've been able to spend some quality time with my spouse's family. We have done a number of fun activities but one of my favourites has been a hiking trip to the Collingwood Hills. We hiked up what felt like a mountain for an hour then descended into some amazing caves, some of which were so small I could barely squeeze myself through! Next came, what for it... Zip lining! It was a double zip, half-mile zip line down the whole hill over lots and lots of tree tops. We ended with a more relaxed hike over a suspension bridge and past some water. WOW! What an adventure that was :)</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Growing up my family did not have the luxury of owning (or renting) a boat or cottage to enjoy our summers together. We did things the old-fashioned way - making our front yard into a campground, among other things lol. This week, I was out on the waters of Georgian Bay with my spouse Michael's family, not once, but twice! His dad recently bought a new boat and we were fortunate enough to enjoy his company and his boat ;) Swimming, fishing and boating, oh my! I truly felt like a kid again and enjoyed every minute of it.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Somewhere this week I found time to stop in at the Dollar Tree here in the big city. I love the Dollar Tree because they have a dedicated teacher section with printables, posters, flash cards, you name it! And the best part of all is that everything in the store is only $1.25! Yep! Being a fairly new and broke teacher, means that I am always on the hunt for things on the cheap. Don't get me wrong, I still look for quality but I LOVE when I can find things at a discounted price ;)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well that's it for now, I hope you enjoyed my first #FiveforFriday post! I sure did, and can't wait to see what next week brings :)</div>

<u><b>It's time for Thanksgiving!</b></u></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yes, you read that right. I promise though, there is no need to worry. My teacher burnout isn't that bad where I actually think I've skipped the entire summer already!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I mean don't get me wrong...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I <b>DO</b> love Thanksgiving, it's actually my favourite holiday! Between the colourful foliage, turkey-feasting and fun family time, who <i>wouldn't</i> love Thanksgiving? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, this post is simply my way of sending some gratitude out into the universe. So here is a list of 5 things that I am grateful for today: </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUKlsI-1a6c6g_dhwAro9eZYGBA-nZfrgqrBGdJpke8WC3db119UGyvTg7yNu0Fk3HT7_TWN5DMZEvXFJrtwPSAqQgvgdIlEr-sh2XN0DiJqOcT81h3naZMfu7XNgofQe58xYyzR2lPas/s1600/PyperandI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUKlsI-1a6c6g_dhwAro9eZYGBA-nZfrgqrBGdJpke8WC3db119UGyvTg7yNu0Fk3HT7_TWN5DMZEvXFJrtwPSAqQgvgdIlEr-sh2XN0DiJqOcT81h3naZMfu7XNgofQe58xYyzR2lPas/s200/PyperandI.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<ol>
</ol>
1. <b>My family</b> -- I'm very lucky to have such close relationships with everyone in my family, and even luckier to have such a wide variety of relationships to learn from. With one sister, one brother, an adorable niece and a mother and father who are still very much in love, I can honestly say that I am one very fortunate woman!</div>
<div>
<br />2. <b>My spouse</b> -- Michael is a very caring and supportive man! This September will mark 10 years together. Through all of our up's and down's, all of our moves and career changes, he's been my one constant. Love you babe ;)<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD_dnOAwSaHVuVGUotzkBr0GYgQWHf35YCHdpzZ0qOZoZ59GT2vAm_82O3kED1MTcln_L0Je4Vv7UEsjOiUpeNB8nHXerrZHhm4paqS0oMnfE_jpOrKJ_8XE0RpHwG5R0zZsuBYlQrzuc/s1600/ninjaturtles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD_dnOAwSaHVuVGUotzkBr0GYgQWHf35YCHdpzZ0qOZoZ59GT2vAm_82O3kED1MTcln_L0Je4Vv7UEsjOiUpeNB8nHXerrZHhm4paqS0oMnfE_jpOrKJ_8XE0RpHwG5R0zZsuBYlQrzuc/s200/ninjaturtles.jpg" width="200" /></a>3. <b>My friends and co-workers</b> -- Growth is what life is all about! My peers have helped me to become the person I am today. I can only hope that many of them will be in my life for a very long time to help me to continue to grow.</div>
<div>
<br />4. <b>My senses</b> -- Although my hearing isn't the greatest (right babe?), I am so thankful for the ability to see the beauty in every rainbow, hear the morning calls of the birds and smell the sweet aroma of (gluten-free) baked goods. That's defintely more than something to be grateful for!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO1NvVySH-hwctMJOELgw82uSxCefuYVmEMJQv3DmXrsUtGIeeJNxb_2uWbon1ve3E1OLRAHi8DN6XjYGsDTxluq5GeNWNsBSKE_9Ck8yzjVJ91WjYORqbymS1-9IqWe1VnvMn8pjbD7A/s1600/Grad.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="139" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO1NvVySH-hwctMJOELgw82uSxCefuYVmEMJQv3DmXrsUtGIeeJNxb_2uWbon1ve3E1OLRAHi8DN6XjYGsDTxluq5GeNWNsBSKE_9Ck8yzjVJ91WjYORqbymS1-9IqWe1VnvMn8pjbD7A/s200/Grad.png" width="200" /></a><div>
5. <b>My education</b> -- Without it, I wouldn't be in the position I am today! It's been somewhat daunting and definitely stressful at times to reach my goals, but it has been more than worth it! I know that I am in a position of privilege to have even had the opportunity to go to university, let alone three times in one lifetime so far, which is why I want to use my knowledge for good. One of my long-term goals is to help aboriginal communities get access to better education through technology integration and pathways planning.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /><div>
So that's me in a nutshell - very family oriented, optimistic and grateful for all that life has offered me! Now my question to you is - "What are you grateful for today"?</div>

This year even though I didn’t have to report on Computer Science for my grade 2’s, I felt that the <b>one</b> computer period I did have with them a week needed to be educational. At first, I used <a href="http://www.reflexmath.com/" target="_blank">Reflex Math</a> to compliment their Math program, but they got bored with it about mid-way through the year, and I needed to spice things up a bit.<br />
<br />
Enter - <a href="http://code.org/">Code.org</a> -<br />
<br />
<img alt="Screen Shot 2015-07-02 at 10.32.16 AM" class=" size-medium wp-image-338 alignright" height="230" src="https://northernedventures.files.wordpress.com/2015/07/screen-shot-2015-07-02-at-10-32-16-am.png?w=300&h=230" style="display: inline; float: right; height: auto; margin-left: 1.5em; max-width: 100%;" width="300" /><span style="background-color: white;">This website provides teachers with both digital and hard-copy lessons to introduce kids to computer programming. No written coding is required on their part, instead it is a simple drag and drop system. However, the critical thinking and problem solving skills acquired are all the same! They have also interwoven kid-friendly components like characters and levels using popular media (Flappy Bird, Frozen, Plants vs. Zombies, etc.) so the kids felt like they were playing a game! </span><br />

The website also provides teachers with progress reports to help identify where students are struggling or excelling. This website is absolutely fantastic, the kids were engaged and they begged to play it when they finished their work early in other classes. I was able to use this at both grade levels (grade 2 and grade 5) as they have a wide range of ability levels to begin with.<br />
<br />
<br />
Some other sites to check out to help kids learn coding are:<br />
<ol>
<li><span style="background-color: white;"><a href="https://www.tynker.com/?t=reset" style="background-color: transparent;" target="_blank">Tynker</a></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;"><a href="https://scratch.mit.edu/" style="background-color: transparent;" target="_blank">Scratch</a></span></li>

<li><a href="http://codekingdoms.com/" target="_blank">Code Kingdoms</a></li>
</ol>
Even though most of these sites offer the "Hour of Code" option, Code.org seems to be the only one that is completely free right now. If you know of any other sites to help kids learn programming please share in the comments below :)</div>

We are constantly reminded as teachers that learning should be <a href="https://vimeo.com/112660487" target="_blank">visible</a>. <span style="text-align: right;">This is really great when applied, especially for experiential learners, but can be difficult when asked to provide examples of assessment to parents and/or administrators. </span><br />

<br />
Students can also have <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA8vsxUo8D8" target="_blank">quick access</a> to their own learning log with a simple QR code! No need for them to memorize yet another set of login information, (what adult ever remembers all of their passwords anyways?) as it's all embedded in a single, small piece of paper that can be glued into their agendas or taped to their desks.<br />
<br />
<br />
Sesame has improved a lot over the past year, and although I haven't been using it for every subject, it was a great addition to have at our Celebration of Learning this month. Parents were so happy to be able to see a collection of their child's work, all at the touch (or scroll) of a finger! There is also an <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sesame-snap/id839909271?mt=8" target="_blank">iPad and iPhone app</a> making it even easier for teachers to assess on the go.<br />
<br />

So with this in mind, I thought back to my pre-service teacher days and reviewed my classroom management plan (you know the one that I so delicately put together during my pre-classroom experience) and tried to find a solution. Alas, although I could find plenty of "teacher jargon" (references to proximity, hand signals, respect and the like) there was no immediate solution that jumped out at me.<br />
<div><br />

</div><div>Their <u>FREE</u> product is really awesome so <a href="http://youtu.be/ZZ27nMOVI_g" target="_blank">click here</a> to watch their video and become acquainted with the wonderful world of online classroom management.</div><div><br />
<a name='more'></a></div><div>ClassDojo has allowed me to switch the focus from highlighting negative behaviour to rewarding good behaviours in and outside of the classroom.</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-o5I-IZh098k-LmIO8AVFmV0zdJX6DUQIc8ll4S6sLdIp-QvmN134_vNXXj5shfmX6GzL2G2AO04kqHrs9OvbQal9E4dCBuX-Pu7_ki7LsUIvYcT3XD2wIv9QzCzumPx4WMojamU47m0/s1600/action.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-o5I-IZh098k-LmIO8AVFmV0zdJX6DUQIc8ll4S6sLdIp-QvmN134_vNXXj5shfmX6GzL2G2AO04kqHrs9OvbQal9E4dCBuX-Pu7_ki7LsUIvYcT3XD2wIv9QzCzumPx4WMojamU47m0/s1600/action.png" width="320" /></a></div><div>We follow a "Perfect Day" system for infractions paired with a "Student of the Month" assembly for the student with most perfect days. I simply incorporated the two systems together . This way I am only inputing the positive behaviour as it happens while still using the "Perfect Day" system (letters decreasing from A-F) for the negative behaviour. At the end of the day I deduct points depending on which letter they got that day. If the student received an "A" then they get a point for having a "Perfect Day". </div><div><br />
</div><div>I also deduct points on the ClassDojo for smaller things like not having their homework completed or not having their gym clothes.</div><div><br />
</div><div>During my search I stumbled across a great <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7prx6IRuLwM" target="_blank">video</a> about how to start your day with ClassDojo. Not only does Mr. Hurst incorporate the SmartBoard, he also encourages the concept of personal responsibility by having them write the learning goal each day.</div><div><br />
</div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCkXe26LeIdw_lLS0gy7QRduCCGZcKB8Bwx051TgbXxY2Yf-unoOvVAWZY6WYgmb9K0-1EeOJQFsVe8Ic8YuZauscBry0B2wd04TqRqXuWmS3-Sp7nHtYnbFDODAsSciMUNU70Avb6YfU/s1600/platforms.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="120" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCkXe26LeIdw_lLS0gy7QRduCCGZcKB8Bwx051TgbXxY2Yf-unoOvVAWZY6WYgmb9K0-1EeOJQFsVe8Ic8YuZauscBry0B2wd04TqRqXuWmS3-Sp7nHtYnbFDODAsSciMUNU70Avb6YfU/s1600/platforms.png" width="200" /></a>One of the really nice things about using ClassDojo is that it is multi-platform. I can use it on my computer, tablet or phone depending on where I am with the students. This enables me to give instant feedback to students. Did I also mention that all of this is FREE? Yep, there's my favourite word again, FREE :)</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxt7Xi-zsgMG8tKZb3DaCBDelFfWwjXpYnjSF57kfNGutpyhES7ap1cGSSSX1IthB-OVQMS3bnDALH3aPHf0ub4p4JDCm__aDY0WdtlAPKCAdfdaqu97aNtj2G9WfcO3B4qIeInmFbs4U/s1600/customization.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxt7Xi-zsgMG8tKZb3DaCBDelFfWwjXpYnjSF57kfNGutpyhES7ap1cGSSSX1IthB-OVQMS3bnDALH3aPHf0ub4p4JDCm__aDY0WdtlAPKCAdfdaqu97aNtj2G9WfcO3B4qIeInmFbs4U/s1600/customization.png" width="320" /></a></div><div>On top of the fact that this tool is really engaging for the students it also makes them accountable for their own behaviours and learning and they can customize their own monster avatar :) </div><div><br />
</div><div>My students absolutely <u>loved</u> being able to make their own monster! </div><div><br />
</div><div>Sometimes I swear, it's all in the small things...</div><div><br />
</div><div>So far this year, ClassDojo already has 2 new amazing features! One is the ability to communicate directly with parents (without having to show your cell number or e-mail address) and the ability to share classes with other teachers at your school. Since i'm sharing my class with four other teachers this year, this aspect has been a godsend! I also really love the communication tool because it has really helped me to acknowledge the good behaviours more (since sometimes a phone call is too much for the little acknowledgements). </div><div><br />
</div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2PeyEBL0FSBmTEJCpqlXLzHEFXOIx2BBv12Juxk3TuT5zxxMbvEkFsCpb0qqJQVDuMV25NdAz5_hmMKFOkpB7uYeinE09Rn0P21WJY4pnGt3YZ8BxQ59WqN85ph4pGLR_UMiT1lcwK9s/s1600/party-900.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="174" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2PeyEBL0FSBmTEJCpqlXLzHEFXOIx2BBv12Juxk3TuT5zxxMbvEkFsCpb0qqJQVDuMV25NdAz5_hmMKFOkpB7uYeinE09Rn0P21WJY4pnGt3YZ8BxQ59WqN85ph4pGLR_UMiT1lcwK9s/s1600/party-900.png" width="320" /></a>Lastly, I wanted to point out that it is completely up to the teacher whether or not to have a reward system paired with their ClassDojo. I have one set up with my class and love the drive I see in my students to achieve the next level of points so that they can get a special treat. I have both individual and group rewards and so far my students have only opted for the whole class reward (which I love to see). <br />

</div><div>If you'd like to get started with ClassDojo, their website also offers a bunch of <a href="https://www.classdojo.com/resources" target="_blank">free resources</a> to help you along the way!</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14426355542495051489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6739874603358408725.post-73406685848220168602014-08-31T21:31:00.000-04:002015-07-05T13:15:36.643-04:00Planning and Marking with Chalk.com<div style="text-align: left;">

Yep! It's that time of year again! The time to slowly peel ourselves out of summer caves and re-enter the classroom full of hope and promise for an awesome school year, while still dreading the amounts of planning and marking that will undoubtably ensue.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm sure that new teachers and seasoned veterans alike have all thought at one point or another "how can I make planning easier?" followed by the inevitable (and repetitive) attempts at organizing our massive teacher binders. However, with the purchase of an iPad mini over the summer, I swore that this year things would be different! </div>

<span style="text-align: center;">What this will do in short - is make my work life a heck of a lot easier! I can track my yearly progress and adjust my planning as needed very easily and won't need to carry my </span><b style="text-align: center;">massive</b><span style="text-align: center;"> teacher binder with me everywhere I go :)</span></div>

In addition to their planning tool Planboard, Chalk.com also now offers an assessment tool called Markboard (in beta). Their whole suite of <u>FREE</u> tools should be up and running by the end of September which will also include a tool to take attendance and one to share files and lesson plans with other teachers in your school.</div>

Now "free" is a term all teachers like, but even so, a free tool needs to be useful and easy to use in order for teachers to adopt it. Honestly, after setting up my classes for the year in Planboard and inputting my class lists into Markboard, I can see that the single-login platform is going to be very easy to maintain and use. </div>

I assure you that I am in no way being asked to promote this tool, I genuinely love it! And I must admit, I love it even more now that they have the Quebec standards available :)</div>
